There is a ton of information about chainmaille so I am not going to go into detail about the whys and where fors as many people have explained it far better then I ever could. Chainmaille has graduated from being used as an armor in days gone by, to an adornment today. Chainmaille can be from very elegant to casual whatever your occasion and your desire.
At DJ's we use different metals, sizes, gauges and colors of jumprings. Many people like the aluminum rings as they have strength and are light weight. If you like some weight to your jewelry then you will no doubt like the pieces that have enameled copper in them. Our jewelry is tumble polished after it is made. Cleaning instructions for the different metals is listed below.
Sterling silver reacts with moisture to create a layer of tarnish or oxidation on its surface. Baking soda activated by boiling water in the presence of aluminum, will dislodge the tarnish by making it bind with the aluminum, leaving the sterling silver clean and shiny again. This is the simple, organic way to clean and polish your sterling silver jewelry.
Aluminum Brighten aluminum by boiling either 1 to 2 teaspoons cream of tartar per quart of water or 2 tablespoons vinegar per quart of water for 10 minutes. If the piece has beads I would be careful with boiling.
Copper dip in lemon juice and watch the tarnish disappear.
